Clearly not as extensive (yet) as the Tournemire "L' Orgue Mystique", but I recently decided to create a set of variations on some Plainchant. As I was due to play at Canterbury Cathedral on St George's Day, I looked for a hymn suitable for the season and found one (No. 125 in The English Hymnal) set to be sung between Easter and Ascension. These three short variations start with a "Scherzo" using the Swell flutes, which lightens up the theme; next is a "Dialogue" in the form of a Cornet Voluntary; finally, a "Meditation" which will really benefit from a decent set of Swell strings. Lasting about 4 minutes, this set is ideal for use before a service or maybe after an Evensong.
