These arrangements of 'What shall we do with the drunken sailor?', 'Shenandoah' and 'The Golden Chariot' for unaccompanied mixed choir retain, in their different ways, something of the original work-songs' call-and-response pattern. They form a coherent suite (the tune of the last is related to that of the first), but can be performed separately.
The romanticism of the second (a river-boat shanty) contrasts with the simple vigour of the first and the complexity of the third.
The tenor solo of the first piece and the baritone solo of the second are intended to be taken by members of the choir.
In 'The Golden Chariot', the American and British versions of thevtune are combined.
