Haydn’s String Quartet No.62 in C Major is one of composer’s most celebrated music works. It is one of his six famous quartets united by Opus 76 that were composed before 1797 and published in 1799. During his visits to England, Haydn was apparently impressed by the hymn “God Save the Queen” and a similar type of work was created for the monarch of his own country – Franz ll. That’s why this quartet in also titled “Emperor”. It happened at the time when Austria was at the edge of war with Napoleon and a strong national motivation was needed. First performed at the emperor’s birthday in 1797, the quartet became the unofficial anthem of the country, and later its melody was used for the official anthem that it used until today – “Gott erhalte Franz der Kaiser” (‘God save the emperor Franz’). The work is scored for two violins, viola and cello, and consists of four movements. First – Allegro (sonata form); second – Poco Adagio, Cantible (strophic variation form); third – Menuetto (two-part canon), and forth – Finale, Presto (sonata allegro form).
