Florian Magnus Maier: Fugacity (2010, 10') for organ, timpani and string orchestra

This piece is a concertino for organ, strings and timpani of medium professional level. It is strongly influenced by the polyphony and relentless drive of Baroque fugues, though it treats the ancient venerable genre with liberty. The organs needs a minimum of two manuals and a 4' register for the passages with the highest notes. The foot register is not used. The timpani part required a standard set of 4 timpani with pedals. All parts are equally important, though every part has soloistic moments as well. Any decent organist, timpanist and string orchestra should be able to rock the house with this piece. The style of the piece is virtuosic at times, but very accessible to all kinds of audiences and not abstract or esoteric at all.

The piece was written for string orchestra Lundi Bleu (Amsterdam) for the Orgelpark concert series in Amsterdam. There is a choice of organs in the Orgelpark and the large organ works beautifully, also in terms of balance.

To guarantee rhythmic precision, it is recommended that the organ player use a headphone monitor to compensate for the spatial distance between stage and organ.
