This six part vocalise is pure Delius: melifluous and highly chromatic, romantic without being over sentimental. Not the easiest of pieces to sing, and with a very wide range, it has nonetheless given many choirs (and audiences) much pleasure over the years.

A pair of sublime pieces, "To be sung of a summer night on the water" were originally unaccompanied part-songs written for wordless chorus in the late spring of 1917. They was also later rearranged to form 2 Aquarelles for String Orchestra.
Being written for voices, they translate wonderfully for flutes. In the first movement the serene melody meanders through the lush chromatic texture, while the second is slightly more lively, featuring a jaunty folk tune. To view sample pages and listen to clips, see D005/D006.

Written in 1917, these two songs, 'To be Sung of a Summer Night on the Water' were originally for wordless chorus, but work beautifully, in a slightly more robust way, for double reeds. The first is a tender plaintive melody, while the second has a jolly theme, reminiscent of 'Do you know the muffin man'!
