The form of this piece is essentially a toccata with a slow introduction. The music describes the notorious whirlpool – Corrievrechan – that exists between two of the Inner Hebridean islands off Scotland. The surrounding land is also wild and uninhabitable and, in describing the scene, the music projects an atmosphere of menacing turbulence.

In addition to introducing the basic musical material for the piece, the slow introduction provides a menacing atmosphere from the outset. The material consists of a rising three-note figure; a repeated chord with a short rising phrase; and a single low note. The music gathers in pace and dynamic, reaching a huge chord for the two pianos out of which the main toccata theme emerges.

There follows the main fast toccata section with various motives that pass between the two pianos. The slow introduction is re-introduced, only to be intrupted suddenly with a development of the fast toccata section. The piece closes dramatically, leaving no imagination as to the horror of this particular landscape.
