The work was commissioned by the Ensemble Modern, Frankfurt am Main, and the Fondation Hindemith, Blonay, Suisse. The premiere took place in Würzburg in 1989. It was performed by the Ensemble Modern under the direction of Hans Zender, who performed the work twice in the same concert. Initially part of an experimental film music project at the Munich Film Festival as the score for Wim Wender's 1988 film of the same name, the work was revised and conceived as a concert piece in its own right.
