The bassoon becomes here similar to an actor reciting his monologue (or inner dialogue) on the stage. It is a direct speech, full of contrasts and various moods: from meditation and sad song to bitter irony and fussy activity.
The piece is written in free atonal technique with some elements of modality. Chromatic scale is extended by quarter tones. Instrumental technique includes several new methods of playing the woodwinds that became an integral part of contemporary performing virtuosity.
The work is dedicated to the outstanding Russian bassoonist Valeri Popov.
