The title Fortitude comes from the lively and stately feeling that Nash chose to portray in this composition, mostly by way of highly syncopated 8th and 16th note passages in a fast tempo and frequent meter changes. Fortitude was originally conceived as a 1-minute string quartet work; however, Nash transformed it to clarinet quartet as well as expanded it to 5 minutes. Nash’s expansion includes sequential repetition to further develop the opening fast movement section. Nash also inserted a quasi-cadenza section to bridge the opening and closing sections.
