The composition takes a Japanese poem that is over 800 years old, a waka, in this case Waka No. 5. This poem form adheres to fixed rules that specify a sequence of 5, or 7 syllables per verse. The content is mostly about sadness and the past according to the typical Japanese concept of "Mono No Aware". The pentatonic is processed in a modern form as sound material and is oriented in the voice leading to the polyphony of western music from the Renaissance. Female as well as male voices can be used, the accompanying instrument is a koto, but can also be replaced by a harp, piano or other instruments. The voices can be used in place of the flutes.
