Clémence de Grandval was an important French female composer of the 19th century, especially prasied by Saint-Saens, with whom she studied. Only two of the four pieces were published during Grandval's lifetime and the other two are from a copyist's copy given by Gillet (the teacher at the Paris Conservatory) to an oboeist who emigranted to the United States. The four movements are Lamento, Valse, Andante Espressivo (Air d'Atala) and Finale.
