Wilhelm Friedemann (hereafter W.F. or Friedemann) was born in Weimar, during the period when his father was employed as organist and chamber musician to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar. His mother died suddenly in July of 1720 when W.F. was nine; his father remarried in December of 1721. Friedemann's musical education and career was supervised with great attention by his father. The Clavier-Büchlein vor Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, with entries dating from 1720 to 1726 in the hands of both J.S. and W.F. Bach, documents the graded course of keyboard studies and composition that his father provided. This education also included (parts of) the French Suites, (Two-Part) Inventions, (Three-Part) Symphonias and the first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier.
