I rarely write instrumental music anymore, but when bassoonist Scott Pool (who had previously recorded my I Never Saw Another Butterfly with mezzo-soprano Wanda Brister) emailed to ask if I would contribute to his Lullaby Project, I was intrigued.
My first attempts came out as etudes, resulting in a separate bassoon cycle, Two for One. Determined to also create a lullaby, I used some of the pitch material from the etudes, and altered rhythms and character to create Bedtime Story.
Premiere: March 1, 2024 with Scott Pool, at the Women Composers Festival of Hartford, Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, Connecticut.
