I set this Thomas Lux poem in 2000 as a present for mezzo-soprano Karyn Friedman and her husband, bass Gary Poster. The song is divided into two corresponding sections, delineated by low piano clusters which represent “inky black and awkward marks.” Musical exchanges between voice and piano highlight the opening and closing, while a rhapsodic mood accompanies Lux’s ruminations about a blank page.
