It is a song cycle based on five poems by Japanese poet Kumagai Naoyoshi. The first song, Human Life, expresses thoughts of joys and sadness through reflections on life. The second song, Snow, depicts freshly fallen snow on a pine grove atop a mountain. In a Beautiful Night attracts the poet and portrays to the listener a gentle and beautiful atmosphere. On the Shore of the Nagara River tells the story of a traveler on the banks of the Nagara searching for the ferryman. The traveler’s voice intermingles with the voices of thousands of insects crying, but no ferry is to be found. The final song, Swallow, depicts the magnificent return of the swallows to the poet’s cottage, a place long ago forgotten by all but these joyous birds.
