An old, favourite melody - this time with five variations - for solo recorder, though it can also be played on any other instrument with suitable range.
A nice encore at a students' recital, it can sound quite virtuosic when the last two variations are played fast!

Arrangement of an English traditional melody to which the 17th century playwright Ben Jonson added the words:
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine. [etc]
In this arrangement I have given the tune to each instrument in turn for each verse and added more and more florid
accompaniment as the piece progresses.

I have now expanded my original quartet arrangement of "Drink to me Only" to make a quintet.
As before, each instrument gets a turn to play the tune, and the fourth instrument leads as a solo.
Since this therefore results in 5 verses, I decided to transpose the last verse up a tone (following the fashion of many pop songs!)

At the suggestion of a clarinet quintet leader I have expanded my original arrangement of Drink to me Only to include an alto clarinet as a fifth member.
As before, each instrument gets a turn to play the tune, and the alto clarinet leads as a solo.

Great :-) Many thanks!

This sounds great! I will get it. Thank you for doing this. Our JELLS clarinet quintet (acronym for Jonathan-Elaine-Lynne-Linda-Sandra) will really enjoy this and plan to perform this for our clarinet choir which meets once a month here in San Diego, California @ the Local Musicians' Union.

I happen to notice that poems set to music is a near-perfect form of art, with two powerful forces united so beautifully in a single composition..
