Equale sind Trauerstücke, die an Allerseelen oder bei Leichenbegängnissen verwendet wurden. Beethoven schrieb sie am 2. November 1812 zum Allerseelentag auf Wunsch des Linzer Domkapellmeisters. Nr. 1 und Nr. 3 wurden in dieser Funktion bei Beethovens eigener Beerdigung am 29. März 1827 in Wien aufgeführt, alternierend für das Posauenquartett und in einer Bearbeitung als Trauergesang für Männerchor. Nr. 2 erklang ein Jahr später anläßlich der Einweihung von Beethovens Grabstein auf dem Wiener Zentrafriedhof am 26. März 1828.
