The Spaniard Enrique Granados (1867-1916) was a pianist and composer of classical music in a Spanish style. He wrote for piano, chamber music, songs, zarzuelas, and an orchestral tone poem.
His work of 1910 “Tonadillas al estilo antiguo” (Tonadillas in the old style), for voice and piano, is a setting of a group of poems by Fernando Periquet. The Tonadilla is a Spanish musical song form of theatrical origin. This arrangement of No. El mirar de la Maja ( The gaze of the Beloved) has a somewhat hypnotic quality and is effective taken at an unhurried and relaxed tempo.
