“Torna a Surriento” (from It. “Come Back to Sorrento”) is a traditional Neapolitan song by the Naples-born Italian musician Ernesto de Curtis. The lyrics of the song were written by composer’s brother Giambattista De Curtis. The song was created in 1902 but officially the author’s rights were declared three years later in 1905. According to the sources, brothers Curtis wrote the piece to address the Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli who was on a visit in their town. The idea was to sing the beauty of their hometown and ask Zanardelli to help its hardworking citizens to beat the poverty and improve their life. The diversity of the singers who performed “Come Back to Sorrento” is impressively diverse. Such artists as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Muslim Magomayev and Elvis Presley presented their interpretations, not mentioning the big number of Italian stars like Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Franco Corelli and others. Other popular songs in this traditional Italian genre include the famous “Santa Lucia”, “Funiculì Funiculà”, and, of course, “O Sole Mio”.
