A festive setting of the familiar Longfellow text (and the tune "Waltham" by J.B. Calkin) for TTBB Chorus and Organ, with optional audience participation. The choir parts are straightforward, with two verses in unison, two using the same 4-part harmony, and one in 2 parts (tune and descant). The organ provides the excitement and colour, with an arresting introduction, a brooding minor reharmonization of the fourth verse ("And in despair I bowed my head...") and a triumphant "pull-out-all-the-stops" final verse. The score (which is a very legible handwritten MS) comes with a printed lyrics sheet that can be copied as desired and handed out to your audience, should you wish to have them sing along in unison with the familiar tune.

Around Christmas time, this is definitely one of my fave pieces to play but somehow I find the desire to do it way out of the holiday time. This standard is an excellent exercise to train the various side of piano playing skill at a time. This is why I got it now to play in the summer and daydream about the frosty Christmas night. I love the arrangements of the popular songs and pieces at musicaneo for they are made equally handlable for the performers of all levels of skill. Also, besides the original intended by John Calkin, I would recommend trying the various version of the song (Casting Crowns, Sarah McLachlan)
