“Sultans of Swing” is a pub/roots rock song by one of the most successful British rock bands called Dire Straits. The song was written by their frontman, the singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler. The original song was released in 1978 as part of the band’s eponymous album (debut). However, the original was not very popular with the fans. In a year, Dire Strats made another release of the song and that’s what turned into an international hit. The 1979 reissued single became one of the 10 most popular songs both in the UK and America. Mark Knopfler was inspired for writing the song after witnessing a jazz band humbly playing a jazz gig in one of the deserted pubs of London, however, grandly presenting themselves as “Sultans of Swing”, which amused the composer. This song is a D Minor composition played at the tempo of 146 BPM.

The charm and hook of Dire Straits early song, and especially this first single, is the fact that the band's leader Knopfler gained the necessary inspiration from observing common people in their everyday routine, their mundane habits and experiences. This treasure source for songwriting was partially lost when they guys became famous. So I mostly value Knopfler's compositions like Sultans of Swing. Moreover, it's a very beautiful tune to play on guitar solo too. Though the original simple lyrics is one of its biggest decorations. Luckily this guitar score has lyrics, and the tabs too.
