“A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” is a romantic 1939 song from Britain. The lyrics were written by the English entertainer Eric Maschwitz and the music by the American composer Manning Sherwin, also known for writing the music to “Who’s Taking You Home Tonight?”. Berkeley Square is a real square situated in London’s Mayfair close to Green Park, however, that nightingale’s singing is not a common thing to be heard there. The song appeared shorty before World War II and was inspired by a short story written by the British novelist Michael Arlen. The tune was published in 1940 after the performance of Judy Campbell and grew increasingly popular after that. Among the most notable artists who recorded and played the song were Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, Perry Como, Twiggy and many others. The song was widely performed on the screen, in various films, shows and series. In modern Berkeley Square, there is a shining sculpture of a nightingale installed during an art festival in 2018 to commemorate the composition.

A very easy and entertaining tune from the 40s. You might feel nostalgic even if you never listened to the music of that age) The arrangement is clear and spot on, possible to print in various keys. It makes a good work for a recital, the rhythm is simple to catch and follow. The piece is lovely both to play on whatever you play and to sing along to as well.
