The Wexford Carol is a traditional Irish carol usually performed around Christmas time. “Wexford” is the name of the county in the South-East region of the country. Today, this carol is listed as one of the oldest existing pieces of the kind. It was preserved thanks to the Irish organist William Flood who transcribed it for adding to the Oxford Book of Carols. It is believed that the lyrics of the song (beginning with ‘good people all this Christmas time’) are older than the tune itself. In early times, the carol used to be performed mostly by men, but in contemporary renditions, there are a lot of recordings by female artists. The most popular versions are those by Julie Andrews, Loreena McKennitt, Yo Yo Ma and Alison Kraus, Michael McDonald, Cara Dillon, Trace Adkins and many others. The composition also makes part of various Christmas collections and Gospel music compilations. The music score is quite easy to follow and learn for both accompanists and singer.

There's something that makes traditional Irish songs in general and carols in particular beautifully stand out at the music arena! I've heard Wexford Carol performed live on the harp and was a sight to behold, truly. I wish I could also hear it played by Yo Yo Ma on the cello, that would be huge! As for the this particular arrangement, it has all you might need from an SSA piece. Very well arranged and laid-out. The harmonies and the rhythms are quite fluid, but that's characteristic for the Celtic music in general. The result is beautiful, anyway!
