The Sparrow, another setting of a Paul Laurence Dunbar poem by the same name was composed for Marquis Murphy, tenor, a student at Fisk University. Using the same compositional conceptual framework as Why Fades a Dream?, Invitation to Love and Hymn, The Sparrow is slow, melancholy and dramatic, composed in a F major modality. The introduction and other interlude-type places without the vocal line, utilize fast note passages of 32nd notes in high piano tessitura, alluding to sparrow birds.
