A short cantata for soloists (SATB) mixed choir and brass Quintet. This text is based on the lyrics in J. S. Bach's cantata "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme", (BWV 140,) also known as Sleepers Wake. The main stanzas are attributed to the priest, poet and composer Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608), while other parts of the text are of unknown origin. (The English text in this music is made by the composer.) The concepts in the lyrics are based on; be prepared for the day of the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:1–11), and from the Gospel of Matthew, the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13). The text style is very symbolic and full of metaphors; the marriage, the feast, the oil lamps, etc. It is also to be understood as a dialogue between Lord Jesus and our souls.
The ambition has been to create something not too difficult, but that it yet should sound somewhat nice and impressive. The quintet needs at least one good trumpet player. The baritone is a little high set, the choir should master some divisi, especially in the Gloria, but for the rest it is not a difficult piece.
