A fun, virtuosic Christmas piece in 7/8 time, for mixed choir a cappella with multiple divisi. Commissioned in 2003 by the University of British Columbia University Singers, whose recording is provided for reference. The piece sets a 17th-century text about the festivities of the Christmas season, and each successive verse piles on more canonic voices and adds wilder notes to the harmonies, as the merry-makers find the "cellar's depths" and start to feel the room spinning a bit! Fortunately, all ends well, with a resolution to "sing some roundelays" and "make our mirth the fuller." The last verse says: "And while we thus inspired sing, / Let all the streets with echoes ring, / Forests and fields and everything, / And let us all be merry!"
