“Lazy River” (also known as “Up a Lazy River”) is a popular 1930 standard. The main melody was co-written by American jazz clarinetist Sidney Arodin (Sidney Arnandan) and the famous American singer and songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. Today, the song is considered to be a pop and jazz standard and can be heard as recordings by various artists. The composition was featured in the Oscar-winning drama film by William Wyler “The Best Years of Our Lives” (performed by Carmichael himself) as well as in the 1969 David Lowell Rich’s film “Hey Boy! Hey Girl!”. The list of music artists who performed the tune is really long, it includes such names as Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Chet Atkins, Glenn Miller, Les Brown, Michael Buble, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, among many others. The most famous and perhaps successful version, though, belongs to Bobby Darin. It was recorded in 1961 and became a number 14 hit.

This is the song that I often play for elderly people because it does bring them back a lot of youth memories and they are always happy when I touch the piano. It is sheer pleasure to see people's face brighten up at the first notes... But even out of the context, the tune is really lovely. I everything about it, the chording, the catchy rhythm and the chromatic incidentals.
