"La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin" is part of Debussy’s First Book of Preludes for piano. Named for a poem by Leconte de Lisle, "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair has been set in multiple formats.
I have here arranged this simple piece for woodwind quintet in the key of C major rather than the original Gb major. I feel that this key sets well with this grouping allowing each instrument to be displayed at it’s finest.
The piece is deceptively challenging. It must be performed very quietly and with a thorough understanding of the original. It can be very beautiful and moving if performed correctly or it can simply become "Some Blonde Chick".

This setting for Clarinet in Bb and string quartet allows the original feeling of the piece to come through. It should be played very quietly and gently with a constant ear to the melody. With all the parts in balance, this setting sets forth the true sound I believe Debussy intended.

Written in 1909 and finished in 1910, "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin" is one of Debussy's most performed works.
I have set it here for brass and in the original key of G-flat major. I experimented with other keys, but it loses it's quiet serenity and grace in other keys.
This short work is purely impressionistic and will offer a break from the usual fare for brass performances. It presents a unique challenge to any brass quintet that your audience will also appreciate.
