Shards is a duet for trumpet and multi-percussion. The “trumpet” part may be played by any trumpet-like instrument (C trumpet, Bb trumpet, Eb trumpet, Bb cornet, flugelhorn, etc.) and the percussion setup required five temple blocks, high and low bongo drums, and five tom-toms.
The piece has four movements in varying tempi and styles played in the following manner: movements I through IV are played in order by both musicians. Movements V-VIII are repeats of the first four movements, played in any order with each player independently choosing which order to play them.
Shards may be played in a shortened version using only the first four movements. In this case the order of the movements may be synchronized between the performers, or they may opt to select the order of movements independently.
