One of Canada's best-known poets, Bliss Carman was born in 1861 in Fredericton, New Brunswick; composer Stephen Smith was born just over a century later in the adjoining province of Nova Scotia. In "Christmas Song," Smith sets three lovely stanzas written by Carman in the 1920's to an expressive mezzo-soprano melody, accompanied by a lush, extended-harmony organ part. The text muses on the way a child's birth brings joy to mankind, renews the earth, and even imparts added lustre to the sun and stars.
