Danse macabre (op. 40) ist eine symphonische Dichtung für Orchester. Die erste Fassung war allerdings ein Lied mit Klavierbegleitung. Saint-Saëns selber machte später noch zwei Fassungen für Violine und Klavier und für zwei Klaviere. Es kamen weitere Transkriptionen von anderen Komponisten hinzu, z.B. für Soloklavier und Orgel usw. Für die Querflöte hat Giuseppe Gariboldi eine "Fantaisie-Transcription" geschrieben.
Gemäss der Legende erscheint der Tod jedes Jahr um Mitternacht an Halloween. Er ruft die Toten aus ihren Gräbern, damit sie für ihn tanzen. Die Skelette tanzen, bis der Hahn im Morgengrauen kräht, dann müssen sie bis zum nächsten Jahr in ihre Gräber zurückkehren.
Die Grundlage dieser Kompositon beruht auf dem Gedicht von Henri Cazalis.

I use "elastic scoring" for my woodwind ensemble pieces. This means that there are "core" parts which must be covered for the pieces to work properly, and "colour" parts which should be used as well, but are cued in other parts and can thus can be considered optional (but highly recommended!).
Colour part cues are marked with square brackets. If a player encounters a cue displayed for example as [Cl 3], the cue should be played while the Clarinet 3 player is absent. Cues without square brackets should not be played. Here is a list of cued instruments:
[Ob] is Oboe
[Eng Hn] is English Horn
[Bsn] is Bassoon
[Cl 3] is Clarinet 3 (or Basset Horn)
[B Cl 2] is Bass Clarinet 2 (or Contra-alto Clarinet)
Harmony Flute and Harmony Alto Flute are optional parts that look a lot like the Oboe and English Horn parts.
Here is the instrumentation! My woodwind ensemble pieces also work nicely for clarinet choir when the appropriate cues are played. Play the colour part cues and use the transposed flute part (for another E-flat Clarinet)

Seinen weltberühmten Danse macabre komponierte Camille Saint–Saëns 1872 zunächst
für Gesang und Klavier auf einen Text von Henri Cazalis (1840-1909). Zwei Jahre später
veröffentlichte Saint-Saëns eine Orchesterfassung, in der die Violine den Gesangspart
übernahm. Später arrangierte Saint-Saëns das Stück auch für Violine und Klavier sowie für
zwei Klaviere und initiierte damit eine Vielzahl weiterer Bearbeitungen, u.a. auch die
für Orgel aus der Feder von Edwin Lemare (1866-1934). Die Orgelbearbeitung erschließt dieses fulminante Tanzstück für die Königin der Instrumente: eine mehr als eine attraktive Bereicherung des konzertanten Repertoires.

Written in 1874, Danse Macabre is a tone poem from Camille Saint-Saens depicting the ancient myth celebrating the brevity of life. According to this myth, the Devil appears in the graveyard on Halloween and has the deceased dance for him to the tune of his violin (In this case a devilish clarinet.)
Originally scored for a very full orchestra, I have attempted to compress this score into five voices without loosing the essential tonal quality from the original. The addition of a struck bell (pitched D4) is the only sound not normally found in a quintet. Even so, the oboe playing D5 is quite adequate.
I hope you will enjoy playing this rather challenging arrangement. I certainly enjoyed the challenge of writing it.

This is a Classical Guitar Transcription of "Danse Macbre" by C.Saint-Saens.
The transcription is for solo Guitar, which made it technically very demanding but it will fit the fingers well once learned.
The Transcription is written in G-minor, same as the original, and with a Standard Tunning.

Yes, this sheet music includes fingerings and positions but only when they are necessary.
Also, this is written in style of Classical music, so it does not have chord names.
In case you have seen this piece in YouTube.
What I have posted in YouTube is the working edition of this sheet music which does not contain any assistance for actual performance.
And what I have here is the Final Edition of the music with appropriate notations and fingering, etc.
