“The Girl from Ipanema” (Port. ‘Garota de Ipanema’) is a song in the popular Brazilian genre bossa nova. It was written in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim (music) and Vinicius de Moraes (lyrics). The English version of the song featuring Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, American jazz sax player Stan Getz and lyrics by Norman Gimbel became a huge international hit. The song was awarded Record of the Year 1965 and became the 2nd most recorded song ever after The Beatles’ “Yesterday”. It is now widely used as lift music worldwide. The girl who inspired the song’s creators still lives in Ipanema district of Rio de Janeiro.
