“Honey” is a country song that was written by the American songwriter Bobby Russell, the author of four more songs to get on the Hot Country charts (e.g. “Saturday Morning Confusion”). The single “Honey” was recorded by the popular American singer Bobby Goldsboro in 1968 and became part of his second studio album as its title track. The composition dwells on the topic of a lost lover, a kind of musical mourning over a deceased dear one. The song became the No.1 song at the time of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in the April of 1968 and stayed among the top songs of the period up until June 1968 where another loud assassination took place: the murder of Robert F. Kennedy. Other popular songs from the “Honey” album by Bobby Goldsboro include “With Pen in Hand”, “Little Green Apples”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”.

it's fun to think that a lot of today's performers try to conquer the public by epatage, stunts, beyond-the-real dancing and sex appeal, while back then the performer was the only one on the stage, just standing there and singing for you and breaking your heart with the awesome music.
