The aria "Bist du bei mir" from the opera "Diomedes, oder die triumphierende Unschuld" by G.H. Stölzel, arranged for string quartet.
"Bist du bei mir" was long incorrectly attributed to J.S. Bach due to its presence in the "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach". The melody is actually an opera aria by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, though the continuo line differs somewhat in the Bach Notebook version. The arrangement is based on the the 1920 Herman Roth realization.

This lovely melody was so well liked by J.S. Bach that he included it in an album of music for "household" use, The Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. The melody is still lovely, and very much worth singing (or playing). But poetic tastes are very different today than in the early 1700's, and it's no longer considered romantic -- or even appropriate! -- to express affection for a loved one by declaring how much we'd like to die in their presence! So I have undertaken to create an English text for this song that a 21st-century person can sing with some degree of sincerity! At the same time, I have written a new realization of the original continuo accompaniment that works well on piano, organ, or digital keyboard. And to further sweeten the deal, the song is provided in both the original (high) key of E-flat AND transposed down to C Major for medium voice. (The audio sample is a score playback of the C Major version.)
