THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC

A Contemporary Sight-Singing Method
for children and beginning Adults

created by professor JOAN YAKKEY - Florence, Italy 2001

preface to pdf 01

The original editions are presented in 16 booklets of 16 exercizes. This file contains the first 4 booklets with easy to moderately difficult sight-singing exercizes in a contemporary idiom created for use in the general music classroom, with choral groups for during single voice lessons. The music can be interpreted by music students of all ages, it can be sung a cappella or accompanied by an instrument if desired. This is not a self-teaching theory album complete of all information on how to interpret melodies, the exercizes contain various meters and tonalities to be used by teachers and students alike as added material to their other studies. Rhythms need to be explained orally by the teacher.

The examples begin using two notes, other sounds are gradually added one by one until all basic notes are studied. The method presented here is based on the FIXED DO system, that is, “C” is always do and “A” is always la. It is our conviction that the MOVABLE DO system reflected in the Kodaly method is adapt for Tonal music, but in the contemporary idiom as we are now so often required to interpret, it is of little help; a basic knowledge of intervals and rhythms is more useful for sight-reading music written in Atonality, Bitonality, Modality or music in frequently changing Tonalities, while at the same time it does not impair one’s learning or ability to read in the tonal system.
However, for those students and teachers who desire to continue using the MOVABLE DO system, the following exercizes can naturally be adapted to this method.

Absolutely good for everyone at all ages, maybe pdfs 05 & 06 are better for adults that have already studied sight-singing: 3 and 4 note melodies, but if the children start on pdf 01, and follow thru, by the time they arrive at pdfs 05 & 06, they'll be capable. Let me know how things go, if you have any problems or questions. Give everyone time to absorb the sounds. Sing the same exercizes several times, have students also sing solo on them. If you have private lessons, you can play a second voice on the piano or sing it yourself in pdfs 04 - 05 & 06.

I'd like to order the complete set. This is good for children and adults?
