Sketches on a Thought is an original Neoclassical work composed for five woodwind instruments - solo flute, two clarinets in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb and bassoon. The piece is a theme and variations divided into three short 'movements' or sections, each with its own distinct harmonic or textural character.
The first movement is the theme, and features stunning harmonies and a flowing, lyrical melody line.
The second movement is based around Phrygian mode, but does not compromise the harmonic structure in order to suit the melody. This results in an unusual chord progression.
The third movement of the work is entitled 'quasi-fugue', and while is not fugal in structure, emulates the style of a fugue by staggering lines and playing melodies in canon.
The instrumentation of this composition was chosen in order to emulate a reed organ accompanying a solo flautist. The basson and bass clarinet fill the role of the left hand while the two clarinets play the right hand's harmonies and countermelodies.
Sketches on a Thought would suit any intermediate wind ensemble. While not technically challenging, the work would suit any ensemble trying to develop their aural skills and intonation, as the work features unusual and close harmonies.
This purchase includes the full score and all five parts.
