This arrangement makes it a cinch for a single performer to play both Gounod's melody and Bach's harmony, essentially as the composers wrote them. The only thing missing is the sixteenth-note figuration of the original Bach prelude -- and in the arranger's opinion, the absence of that feature actually makes for the best possible organ rendition of this much-loved music.

Ave Maria was published in 1853 as Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach. The melody was composed by the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod, who superimposed over slightly changed version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier.
