Essay on Silent Night is a fantasy based on the traditional hymn, Silent Night, written by Francis
X. Gruber. The work was commissioned by Dr. Karl E. Moyer for performance during midnight
mass on December 24, 1998 at Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The work begins, in three quarter time, with the tempo set at Andante. The motion picks up in
bar 29 with a switch to four quarter time. The piece returns to the beginning for a brief
restatement before concluding at measure 86. ASCAP
