Part of the liturgical mass, the Kyrie is the first portion of the Ordinary Mass. The text is Greek for Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. This rendition of the Kyrie is written in a chant-like style with modern resolutions as well as complex diatonic chords which would not have been customary for this kind of movement. What one should take away from this piece is a sense of the wonder and beauty of this text which is mirrored in the simple yet profound harmonies and rhythms of this piece.
