Tundra Canticle (2003) for bassoon and contrabass was written for and is dedicated to Brad and Doug Balliett. The work takes its inspiration from the frozen tundra of the Northern regions.
The work is cast in three sections. An opening section alternates dramatic statements with lyric phrases. The second, slower section further develops this lyric texture, building to a climax. The third section brings back the opening material and presses on to a coda.
