Inspired by Gounod's "Ave Maria" countermelody for the C Major Prelude from Book I of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, I have composed a countermelody for the (somewhat similar) C-sharp Major Prelude from Book II of the 48 -- although my obbligato, rather than being conceived for the voice, is suitable for just about any treble instrument. In this transposed version, without the hideous seven-sharp key signature, the piece can actually live up to its name and be performed with great tranquility by both the instrumental soloist and the collaborating pianist!
This free download contains all the necessary materials for a performance: a transposed version of the original Prelude (with editorial markings corresponding to the obbligato), and two versions of the obbligato itself: one for treble instruments in C (violin, flute, oboe, et al.) and one for treble instruments in B-flat (clarinet, trumpet, soprano saxophone, et al.).
Note that the accompanying sound file is in Bach's original key of C-sharp Major.

Unlike Gounod's famous obbligato, mine has no text, and in fact it is not conceived for the voice; it is, however, suitable for any treble instrument, the range being from middle D# to the D# above the staff. This version is for instruments in C; a separate download is available for clarinet and other B-flat instruments.
