Gary Powell Nash was blessed to have visited the countries of Ghana, Spain and Vietnam during the 2006-7 academic year and as a result, he has composed several musical works based on and inspired by his experiences in those three countries. The Volta River is the main river system in the West African country of Ghana. It flows south into Ghana from Bobo-Dioulasso highlands of Burkina Faso. Nash’s composition Volta River Fantasy Suite consists of five movements, arranged in a fast, slow, fast, slow, fast fashion with each movement featuring different configurations of flute and percussion instruments. Movement 1, a fast movement titled “Crusade” uses piccolo and drum set. Movement 2, a slow movement titled “Retreat” incorporates alto flute and vibraphone and the movement concludes with an alto flute solo. Movement 3, a fast movement titled “At the Marketplace” is a fast movement in triple meter and utilizes the flute and Djembe drum. Movement 4, a slow movement titled “Strolling Home” is a vibraphone solo. Movement 5, a fast movement titled “Happy Dancing” features piccolo and drum set with a blues/shuffle-like feel.
