Armgart was the winning song in the 2000 Boston Art Song Competition, in which all participating composers were required to set this excerpt from George Eliot’s Victorian era poem Armgart.

Armgart is a young opera singer who eventually loses her voice. In this portion of the poem, she sings of the beauty and power of music. The music seems to open in “mid-stream,” both harmonically and melodically, befitting the setting of an excerpt. The tonal centers in this song frequently change, creating a feeling of restlessness.

Premiere Recording: Within These Spaces — The Songs of Lori Laitman CD (Albany) with soprano Jennifer Check and pianist Warren Jones — available on Spotify.
