This piece is based on the Ukrainian folk wedding song Ta plyvy, plyvy, sira vutko (Oh flow, flow, you grey duck), which was recorded by me on June 28, 1981 from three old ladies, the residents of the village of Seredniy Burluk, Velyky Burluk district, Kharkiv region, while conducting my summer folklore field research. According to the tradition, this song was sung at the wedding ceremony when the bride was an orphan. Hence the mournful character of the song: in the lyrics, the bride applies to her deceased parents and asks them for a piece of advice. The work was performed for the first time in 1985 by Iosif Purits (Sn).
