This arrangement for woodwind quintet was designed to move its listeners with emotion. The adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to convey, with only a slight change in tone and the addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Despite being a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion and is intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music. Nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using the arrangement for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31 years old, the “Moonlight Sonata” (“Mondscheinsonate” in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven’s death. It was critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to moonlight on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called “Quasi una fantasia” by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer’s pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow and hypnotic arpeggio movement that is the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of ‘Trauermusik’ (funeral music).

Pure beauty. I can't think of a better-composed piano solo. I do love playing Chopin's etudes too but nothing can shadow the charm of the eternal Moonlight 'song', it's one of those pieces that can be played on repeat and never bore one even in a few centuries. And I'm not even exaggerating.

comments Clara Wellins 06 Jan 2016 12:47

The weird thing is that it's not the opening of the piece that touches my soul deeply. Rather Presto agitato does.

comments Samuel Nolan 14 Dec 2015 15:02

The first notes of this piece make my eyes wet. I mean it.
