Das Weihnachtslied ragt aus der Vielzahl seines Genres durch einige Besonderheiten heraus. Die Kombination der Landessprache mit dem Lateinischen weist auf den frühen sakralen Ursprung des Textes hin. Mit der Darstellung des Himmels samt Ansiedlung der Musik daselbst (als einzige der menschlichen Künste) in der 3. Str. erhält er eine dramaturgische Steigerung, welcher der variierte Chorsatz nachspürt. Zudem suggeriert die hymnisch festliche Melodie eine gewisse Klangfülle, die sich in den zahlreichen Stimmteilungen manifestiert. Der antiphonartige Wechsel von M.- und F.- Stimmen kann sym bolisch als das Miteinander von "irdischen" und "himmlischen" Chören gesehen werden.

Die beiden Oberstimmen sind kanonisch-kontrapunktisch miteinander verflochten und somit gleichberechtigt. Die Unterstimme als harmonische Stütze ist nur gelegentlich an der motivischen Arbeit beteiligt. Der Text des Weihnachtsliedes wird musikalisch ausgedeutet ; seine 2. Strophe gibt mit dem Stichwort "Jesu parvule" den Anlass zu dem eher meditativen Mittelteil des festlich froh gestimmten Liedes bzw vorliegenden Trios . In der Streichtrio - Fassung kann die Unterstimme wahlweise vom Violoncello oder einer Viola ausgeführt werden.

Die beiden Oberstimmen sind in ihrer kanonisch kontrapunktischen Verflechtung gleichberechtigt.Die 2. Strophe gibt mit dem Stichwort "Jesu parvule" den Anlass zu einem kontemplativen Kontrastteil in dem festlich froh gestimmten Weihnachtslied.
