Joseph Haydn

Classical

Joseph Haydn as one of the key composers of the First Viennese School is considered by his own right a father of the symphony – he endowed the genre with more than a hundred compositions. This fact alone is a striking proof of his persistence and scrupulousness, he was the man who entirely devoted his life to music and never had doubts about the correctness of the chosen path.

Haydn’s methodical work also helped him to define the look of the string quartet in the form known to us today. In this respect Mozart’s assertion that namely Haydn as his mentor taught him how to write correctly in this genre is very characteristic. As for Haydn who was chiefly a self-educated young composer, in his mature years his creative pursuits were to a certain extent executed with a relative freedom, because as a bandmaster he had a whole orchestra under him. Haydn’s merited success was only evident during his last years, though not because of the greatness of his culminating  compositions since it was only fractionally the case – for his oratorios The Creation and The Seasons are true masterpieces – but can be attributed to the ignorance of some contemporaries. For instance, his wealthy patron was not content with the duration of Haydn’s symphonies and ordered him to curtail them. We, on the other hand, intend to represent Haydn’s compositions in the form the composer wanted them to be and suggest a rich collection of his works with a total number of 2185 compositions, 185 of them you can download for free. Enjoy the diversity of the renowned symphonist!
