Seinen Choral varié, op. 55, hat d’Indy 1903 für Saxophon mit Begleitung des Orchesters komponiert. Wie zahlreiche seiner Zeitgenossen (Ravel, Debussy, Hindemith u.a.) suchte auch er die Charakteristika des 1840 von Adolphe Sax erfundenen Blasinstruments kompositorisch auszuleuchten. Wie fast alle „Choräle“ französischer Provenienz beruht auch die Melodie von d’Indy Choral allein auf der Inspiration des Komponisten. Formal entfaltet sich der Choral varié nebst zugehörigem Kontrapunkt in unterschiedlichen Stilen, Rhythmen und Harmonien. Vorliegende Orgelbearbeitung sucht diesen weithin unbekannten Choral für den Orgelliteratur zu erschließen und ihm dadurch die gebotene Verbreitung über die Ausgangsbesetzung hinaus zu erschließen.
