In the same way that Charles Gounod added a new melody to an existing Bach Prelude to create his "Ave Maria," I have composed obbligato melodies for two more of the Preludes from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier: No. 5 in D Major and No. 20 in A Minor. Unlike Gounod's tune, however, these obbligati have no texts, and are better suited to treble instruments than voice. The D Major obbligato is playable by violin, flute, or oboe; the A Minor is best suited to the violin. With appropraiate transpositions, both obbligati could be played by clarinet as well. In the accompanying sound files, I play the original Preludes on acoustic piano and the obbligati on a synthesizer.
